About US Bank
The US Bank or US Bancorp is a bank holding company based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the company which holds the seventh largest bank in the United States of America the US Bank (also known as US Bank National Association).
The company provides services like banking, investments, brokerage, payment services products, mortgage and trusts to individuals, businesses, government-run organisations and other financial institutions. With over 3106 branches and 4842 ATM spread across the country, US Bank has marked its presence well. It also owns a credit card transaction division called Elavon. The US Bancorp is also a leading provider of corporate trust services and a leading supplier of Visa Purchasing cards and Corporate Cards worldwide.
A little bit of history
In 1929 around 85 banks to together to form the First Bank Stock Investment Corporation. The main aim behind this was to support each other financially during the difficult economic era. But the onset of the Great Depression caused many banks, including the most conservative ones, to close their doors.
During this time, in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered a 10-day closure of all national banks. At the end of this forced holiday, only those banks with a strong financial base were allowed to open. The First Bank Stock Investment Corporation subsidiaries opened because they had strong financial bases. So much so that they began their acquisition campaign all through the 1930s.
But with no central governance, the various banks in the corporation generally operated on their own, resulting in stiff competition within the Corporation. This was proving detrimental to the company in the 1940s. In 1954 the US Congress passed the Bank Holding Company Act giving bank holding company’s approval to branch and expanded across states. Though the banks in the First Bank confederation expanded under the act, the lack of centralised governance created a lack of uniformity in services and decision making.
Surviving bad times
The depression of the 1970s and the recession of the 1980s caused a lot of losses to the First Bank confederation. Its focus on capital markets, merchant banking and lending proved the most disastrous. This caused it to step back from merchant banking, credit cards, ATMs and put into order a reorganisation strategy.
A change of board with John F. (Jack) Grundhofer to act as chairman, president, and chief executive officer, led a massive cost-cutting strategy which aimed to bring the bank back from the red. This strategy also included a withdrawal of lending to large entities and concentration on retail banking, trusts and investments, and small and middle-range businesses. He also spent a massive amount on reinventing the technology used and centralising and modernising it.
This era of change also brought along with it several acquisitions, governmental help and name changes; the US Bank has grown into a stable entity today.
Today US Bank
Today the US Bank has many financial businesses. The core is made up of Consumer and Business Banking, Corporate and Commercial Banking, Payment Services and Wealth Management and Investment Services. It continues to grow from strength, expanding its horizon every day.
